Styria is Austria's most mountainous wine-growing region. Steep slopes, a Mediterranean climate with abundant sunshine, high rainfall, and significant temperature variations between day and night, as well as the meticulous manual labor in the vineyards, characterize Styrian viticulture. The region is divided into three wine-growing areas: Southern Styria DAC, Vulkanland Styria DAC, and Western Styria DAC, each distinguished by its unique soils, landscapes, and climatic conditions. DAC stands for Districtus Austriae Controllatus and designates regionally typical quality wines with protected designation of origin.
This diversity is particularly evident in the single-vineyard wines (Riede in Austria refers to vineyard site). These wines represent the pinnacle of Styria's origin pyramid and express the unique characteristics of their respective terroir with exceptional precision. At the presentation in Palais Ferstel, more than 50 single-vineyard wines from the three Styrian wine-growing regions can be tasted and compared.
Thus, there is a great deal of exciting things to taste, compare, classify, weigh up, and discuss at a high level, such as origin, vintage characteristics, content and depth, the winemaker's signature, and much more – in short, the entire Styrian wine culture.
