My notes on this are: On the nose, beautiful ripeness, has something noble about it, with notes of ripe pears, mirabelle plums, applesauce; on the palate, a lively start, then power and then elegance, subtly salty underneath, clean finish that encourages you to smack your lips again, subtly peppery, from which fine mineral notes emerge.

Wiener Gemischter Satz means that several grape varieties grow in one vineyard, are harvested and vinified together, with no single variety allowed to dominate with more than 50%. The vineyards within the city limits of Vienna are classified as DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus), quality wines with a protected designation of origin and specific criteria. In Austria, Ried means vineyard site, and Preussen does not refer to the historical country but to its former owner, Royal Councilor Heinrich Preussel, who held the Nussdorf Urfar (a historic landing place) as a fief from 1277 to 1288. Nussberg is the Viennese district where several vineyard sites are located. 1ÖTW stands for Erste Lage (first site) of Austrian traditional wineries.

The owner, Hans Schmid, sees himself as a visionary, fascinated by Vienna's picturesque wine country from a very young age, and committed to ensuring that the Mayer am Pfarrplatz winery becomes a flagship of Viennese winemaking. Ludwig van Beethoven lived in the romantic, listed Nussdorf suburban house on Nestelbachgasse near Pfarrplatz as early as 1817, while working on his Ninth Symphony. The adjacent tavern, offering both traditional wine taverns and a wine bar, is also well worth a visit.
