Great Rieslings! No wonder they  were rated so well at the latest bonvinitas Wine Award – of course in blind tests by external testers. Here are my subsequent notes:

Distinguished – noble – aristocratic

2023 Merler Königslay-Terrassen Riesling Moselle, GG Grosses Gewächs DER RING Mosel 1899, German quality wine, 12.5%, Wine Estate Albert Kallfelz, Zell-Merl. Dry goes without saying at Großes Gewächs. Here are my notes:

As soon as you smell it, a very noble fragrance unfolds with notes of peaches, nectarines, Williams pears, ripe mirabelles; the tongue experiences a very noble aristocratic wine accompanied by subtle mineral notes, slightly smoky, with an equally highly elegant finish flanked by very fine hints of white pepper. It fits will for toasting as well as to oysters, seafood or roast veal – 93 bonvinitas points. Red dots mean category 2, dry, over 12% alcohol. Here is the evaluation system.

Sublime - racy - distinctive

2023 Merler Fettgarten Riesling Mosel, GG Grosses Gewächs DER RING Mosel 1899, German quality wine, 12.5%, Wine Estate Albert Kallfelz, Zell-Merl: The nose experiences a distinguished fragrance accompanied by race, reminiscent of lemon zest, summer apples, candied orange peel including walnuts, delicately smoky accompanied; on the palate, a very firmly built body opens up, in which the lemon zest and candied orange peel reappear, which flows into a distinctive, slightly peppery finish that animates the next sip as elegant as it is spirited. Nice with old hard cheese, smoked salmon, roast veal or roasted duck. 96 bonvinitas points.

DER RING Mosel 1899

The Wine Estate Albert Kallfelz in Zell-Merl/Moselle

Wine Estate Albert Kallfelz - cask cellar

covers around 60 hectares of vineyards, mainly in the first-class Merler sites Adler, Königslay-Terrassen, Stephansberg and Fettgarten with the slate soils that are so great for Riesling.

It all began with the passion of Albert Kallfelz with an initially small family estate in which viticulture had been practiced for centuries. Kallfelz can be considered one of the tireless pioneers with whose commitment the Moselle regained its good reputation. Since 01.01.2021, the estate has been run by son Maximilian Kallfelz and son-in-law or brother-in-law Florian Scheidt. They proudly count themselves as members of DER RING Mosel 1899.

"We have made it our mission to preserve steep slope viticulture on the Moselle and continue to invest in the stock, expansion and, above all, in the care of these unique steep slopes. The top location Merler Königslay-Terrassen is now almost exclusively owned and forms the heart of our vineyards," is the credo.
