The Kaiserstuhl, with its mild climate, volcanic soils, and loess terraces in Germany's southwest corner, forms a unique terroir with magnificent wines. Burgundy varieties, and thus strong, full-bodied wines, are at the forefront. Pinot Noir, with its elegant, not-too-peppery red wines, also produced as Weissherbst or rosés, accounts for over 32% of the vineyard area, followed by Pinot Gris, with its wonderfully appealing palate (25.4%), and Pinot Blanc, with its beautiful glaze (13.3%).

Photo credit: Edler von RabensteinGeologically, the Kaiserstuhl is a long-extinct volcano, rising from the flat Rhine plain near Freiburg in the Breisgau as a small mountain range with its typical vineyard landscape , visible from afar. The Totenkopf peak reaches over 550 meters. Even well-known sites, such as the Achkarrer Schlossberg, rise to over 350 meters.

The Kaiserstuhl Wine Marketing

After Badischer Wein GmbH ceased operations at the end of 2023, the twelve Kaiserstuhl winegrowers' cooperatives, representing 80% of the vineyard area, decided to pool their cross-company marketing resources into Kaiserstuhler Wein-Marketing GmbH (KWM). The goal is to raise awareness of the wines from the volcano beyond the region. KAISERSTUHL Wein vom Vulkan (Kaiserstuhl Wine from the Volcano) is the name of the association and the logo.

A hot-air balloon is planned to launch from numerous locations, and Kaiserstuhl wine will be served at numerous events, including the Kiel Week, to bring the excellent wines from the volcano closer to the public. Radio advertising is also planned. More information about the KWM, including a changing selection of excellent wines, can be found here.

Immerse yourself in the Kaiserstuhl lifestyle – many tourism offers

The small volcanic mountain range with its typical wine-growing landscapes has also shaped the lifestyle of the Kaiserstuhl region, which can be experienced during visits and trips. Gastronomy and culinary delights are inviting, as are wine hikes and bike tours. A highlight, along with numerous local wine festivals, is the Breisach Wine Festival, which will take place from August 29 to September 1 in 2025. A new 'KaiserHerbst' (emperor autumn) festival is planned, featuring plenty of culinary delights and numerous local events.
